The value I place on TOK
Epistemology (from Greek ἐπιστήμη – episteme-, “knowledge, science” + λόγος, “logos”) or THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE is the branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge. It addresses the questions:
* What is knowledge?
* How is knowledge acquired?
* What do people know?
* How do we know what we know?
* Why do we know what we know?
Much of the debate in this field has focused on analyzing the nature of knowledge and how it relates to similar notions such as truth, belief, and justification. It also deals with the means of production of knowledge, as well as skepticism about different knowledge claims.
Theory of Knowledge in the IBDP is a course taken by all students. Students are mere “actors of knowledge”.
The course is formulated and centered around one main question: How do you know? One is supposed to use the Ways of Knowing and the Areas of Knowledge to discuss how one acquires, perceives, and applies knowledge and how reliable it can be. Another question central to the ideas of ToK, relating specifically to the application of knowledge is: What is your obligation as a knower? Questions that may be discussed may include examples such as How do you know that the scientific method is a valid method of gaining knowledge? or What is the reason for having historical knowledge, and how is it applied in life? And so on and so forth.
It does not matter if you want to become an actor, a pilot or a jurnalist, theory of knowledge is the one subject we all need as people.
Knowledge is power and once you gain it you need to know how to use it. That’s what TOK is all about.
The value I place on TOK is priceless because it is beyond knowledge what we need to become amazing.
TOK is an art that everyone should handle.
